The National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (NRAS) of Australia went into effect on 1 July 2010. The plan is controlled by national legislation, specifically the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009 (The National Law). The National Law states that the duty of Health Practitioner Boards is to safeguard the public. The nursing and midwifery professions in Australia are governed by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
Registration of all nurses and midwives in Australia must be registered with the NMBA in order to practice. Under the National Scheme, registration renewals dates have been linked across Australia. Since 2012, the 31st of May has become the national renewal date for the nursing and midwifery specialties. You can renew your registration online.
